FASHION, SHOPPING: Maria Calderara, whose store is at 23 Rue de Cherche-Midi, is an Italian who finds herself in Paris to make French women look monochromatically glamorous with a deconstructed hand… she also features amazing costume jewelry that is designed tonally to enhance her collection of clothing; Robert Clergerie at 5 Rue de Cherche-Midi, 33 1 45487547 (with many other locations around Paris), has been designing shoes for over 30 years, and always gets it right; Victoire at 1 Rue Madame, 33 1 45442814 (another location at Place de Victoire), a collection of private-label & designer fashion, always of-the-moment; Dries Van Noten at 7 Quai Malaquais, 33 1 44270040, a feast for all of the sense when you enter his atelier filled with rare collectible clothing made from tapestry to glove-leather (next door is the recently opened men’s outpost!); Au Bain Marie, formerly located near the Hotel Crillon, it is now located at 56 Rue de L’Universite, 33 1 42710862, and features a range from kitchen & tabletop curiosities to must-have accessories; Astier de Villatte, at 173 Rue Saint Honore, 33 1 42607413, where they manufacture and sell white-glazed dinnerware & pottery that is distinctive and collectible; DON’T MISS the two most important concept stores, Colette (pictured), at 213 Rue Saint Honore, 33 1 56353390, which features the trendiest, edgiest, most unique fashions and gift items from across the globe… be sure to stop at the water bar downstairs!; Merci (pictured), at 111 Boulevard Beaumarchais, 33 1 42770033, is the newer of the concept stores, founded by the people who started Bonpoint, and is housed in a former car-garage near the Bastille: this lifestyle outpost has two cafes, a home area, as well as men’s and women’s clothing & gifts; Aspesi, a favorite Italian outerware brand for men and women, recently opened at 15 Rue Marche Saint Honore, 33 1 42860719, for highly functional yet fashionable year-round, all-weather jackets, vests, and RTW; another Italian designer recently opened a shop at 179 Boulevard Saint Germain, Brunello Cucinelli, best known-for fine-gauge cashmeres, luxurious linens, and washed silks in tones taken from the subtle stones of the buildings & streets of Paris.

COUPLE MORE: the best way to learn about the city is to walk—trying different streets and different sections of the city each day; if you want a quick overview of the best fashions in Europe, and don’t have time to stroll the streets, visit Bon Marche (left bank) or Printemps (right bank), focusing on the designer floors, perfectly edited so you get the best feel for the season.
