This week we’ll finish up our feature of the latest prints and patterns from Paris, Milan, and London. Use Deb’s shots from Europe’s store windows to identify current pieces in your wardrobe as well as to track down new ones!

NOVELTY PRINTS TO PICK THIS SPRING

“A range of prints and patterns emerged that have a whimsical to dramatic appeal, ideally mixed with seasonal solids or classic patterns. Most outstanding are those inspired by retro to futuristic times. Watch for lightning bolts, calligraphy, cartoon images, nostalgic western, neo-animal skin, and black and white to full-color photographs. Less is more when it comes to this look… perhaps a handbag or a shoe will do.”

MIXING AND MATCHING YOUR PATTERNS

“There is a bohemian ethnicity to pattern mixing and matching this season. Popular dualities include stripes with florals, dots with batiks, plaids with lacey looks, and abstract artisan pictorals with simple geometrics. Patterns are tied together with like color stories or are completely random in combination with one another. Varying scales and intensity of color offers another dimension to further enhance pattern mixing possibilities. The result is a look that is at once ornamental yet somehow familiar… inspired by various ethnicities and eras gone by.”

Pattern & Print, Week 2: Black and White + April 4, 2012

BLACK AND WHITE, BLACK WITH WHITE

“Black and white is best in patterns that are decorative and mixed with one another for an ultra-fashionable look. Consider micro- to macro-houndstooth, lacey effects, grillwork and scroll, ikat, and space-dye, as well as classic stripings, checks, and herringbone rounding out this embellished to kinetic trend. Black and white patterns are often mixed this season with one another; conversely, black and white ‘color-blocking’ is also an effective way to use this timeless duo.”

Pattern & Print, Week 2: Chalk-full of Color and Neutrals April 3, 2012

A CHALK-FULL SPRING WARDROBE

“Spring/summer ushers in a wide range of prints and solids colored in diffused, often blurred ‘pastels’ and neutrals. This chalky effect is best in stripings, faded florals, scroll and pasymetry, ikats, and space-dye knits. These versatile feminine patterns are ideal to assort with un-dyed linens, silks, and cottons as well as muted pastel versions of the same. Nude, chambray, blush, lemon-ice, menthe, and apricot work together to create an uber-ethereal yet contemporary look for the season.”
