First comes Memorial Day, then comes summer: weekends away, outdoor fun and summer flicks to catch on those chance rainy days (just to name a few)… We are loving just thinking about summer here at Bungalow, and can’t imagine our first set of summer-themed posts without delving into your beach needs. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday posts will cover your patriotic spirit from the beginning to the end of the season (Labor Day weekend, sigh), and don’t miss Wednesday Obsessions thrown into the beachy mix. Enjoy!

Events: a Wrap-Up of the Recent Mother’s Day Shop at Powell Elementary May 30, 2012

SCOUT fans, we wanted to share with you another local opportunity we were able to be a part of, the third annual Mother’s Day Shop at Powell Elementary School in downtown DC. On Friday May 11th over 300 students at the school got jewelry for the mom figures in their life and later gifted it in a SCOUT travel accessories case. This year’s event had the largest participation by students to date, so we’re thrilled to report that all of the boys and girls who came to browse and ‘buy’ gifts in anticipation of Mother’s Day went home with some fab donated jewelry and the additional present of a SCOUT bag.

We’re told that once they had made their purchases,

“they came down off the stage to the packaging tables where, to their surprise, they received the adorable Scout bags generously donated again this year by Deb and Ben Johns at Bungalow”.

The students were offering ideas for how their mom might use her new SCOUT bag,

“like for jewelry or makeup or car keys”.

(more below!)

This year’s Mother’s Day Shop was another great success and one more reason why the Bungalow team loves helping out where we can in the DC community. The ‘grassroots’ level charities we have worked with and will continue to work with are perfect indicators of the ‘generous’ lifestyle we are always promoting. Our consumers and retailers no doubt have busy and fast-paced lives through which they carry their SCOUT bags and bins, so to own a bag that in turn helps one of our DC neighbors is a purchase of which the SCOUT fans can be very proud. Thanks for your continued support of our brand, which makes our support for these organizations possible!

Wednesday Obsessions: Suncare We Can’t Get Enough Of

Yo Deb readers, welcome to the sixth installment of our weekly newsflash for all things up-and-coming, ‘Wednesday Obsessions’. We are excited to bring you the latest info on people, places and things being discussed around the world and around the world wide web. Start following us to receive an email each week when a new W.O. post is published!

GOOD-FOR-YOU SUNCARE:

From UVA to UVB rays, from SPF to broad spectrum, we’re breaking it all down for you here, courtesy of the Skin Cancer Foundations handy online guide.

-Kiehl’s is known for making no-fuss, not overly perfumed skincare, so what better company to use than one which has its roots grounded in good sense and plenty of SPF? We are loving their Super Fluid SPF 50 UV Defense for day, and then at night use the Line-Reducing Concentrate! Don’t forget that Kiehl’s makes a fab lip balm as well, its SPF 15 Lip Balm which you can purchase either with or without a hint of sheer color. Basic, easy-going and reasonably priced – just a few of the reasons we are Kiehl’s skincare fans!

-Clarins is a classic skincare brand perhaps better known today for top-notch hues of liquid tanning lotion, but lately we’re loving it’s sun protectors, namely the SPF 50 duo of Sunscreen and Sunscreen Spray. The best part about Clarins is that, outside of the drugstore realm, most of the running line can be found at your nearest department store!

-We couldn’t bring you unbeatable skincare without sharing our latest favorites from funny and well-established brand Bliss - from your 20s to your 90s, good skincare starts with effective lotion, so we recommend Bliss’s Youth as We Know It Anti-Aging Cream in SPF 30 (for the less-genetically-blessed who need a bit more T.L.C.), as well as the Fabulous Face Lotion in SPF 15 (for the genetically-blessed who just need a little ‘maintenance’).

-Similar to Kiehl’s in the no-fuss and reasonably priced lineup are options from Dermalogica and Mario Badescu - Dermalogica makes face lotion for the ‘Ultra-Sensitive’, and Mario Badescu makes Aloe Moisturizer… stock up on both of these if you are prone to breakouts, if nix the dyes and perfumes or you just require the face lotion-equivalent of petting a soft puppy (read: gentle skincare that simply protects your face, nothing more and nothing less).

-Malin & Goetz is a favorite of ours not only for the colorful packaging but especially for the range of lotions and creams to suit your skin – wear their SPF 15 Facial Moisturizer by day, then apply their Replenishing Face Cream for a nighttime detox that puts the good nutrients back into your skin.

-Last but not least, our latest obsession is Dr. T’s Supergoop! products, specifically his Save Face and Sunscreen Swipes – both have extra UV protection to shield you from the stronger rays, and who doesn’t love a towlette to have on-hand for SPF reapplication emergencies?

It goes without saying that we are not the skincare ‘experts’ – we leave that job to the Skin Cancer Foundation, as noted above. Educate yourself product-wise with Deb’s favorite brands above, and be sure to read up on the latest UV news on the web here!
