Deb's Desk: Austin Photoshoot

With an atmosphere that reads cool, contemporary, bohemian, modern, southern, and traditional all at once, Austin, Texas couldn’t have been a more intriguing and exciting destination for our Spring/Summer 2019 catalog photoshoot. With an ever-expanding foodie culture, rich music scene, and affinity for murals, wall art, and creative spaces in general, there’s a definite feeling of freedom in the Austin city air (or, as our Chief Creative Officer, Deb Waterman Johns, calls it “the boho cowboy vibes”). Austin’s irresistible vibrancy and quirkiness are among several reasons this city felt spot-on for a SCOUT photoshoot.

The recent (January 23rd) release of our Spring/Summer 2019 catalog nudged our team to reminisce about some of our favorite images and destinations from the shoot. Upon doing so, we began to research other creative, colorful, and celebratory destinations Austin has to offer. And we felt compelled to share…

The copper-clad Austin City Hall building and public plaza serves as a gateway to Austin city government and provides a space for public discourse and community collaboration. The People’s Gallery at City Hall is a free, annual exhibition designed to showcase regional artists and promote dialogue, understanding, and a greater appreciation of visual art. Free art, commerce, and community collaboration? This Austin city train is bound for glory.

Head to Austin’s newest boutique hotel, Archer, for a shot of Southern hospitality and Texas chic. With floor-to-ceiling horse images covering the expanse of an Archer King Suite and airy, linen canopy beds, you’ll be living in the cowgirl lap of luxury. Order up dinner from Franklin Barbecue and enjoy your brisket... ribs… pulled pork… on the balcony, because believe us: You Will Never Want to Leave.

Located on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin, the Blanton Museum of Art is the primary destination for art in the city of Austin. With over 18,000 works in the collection, the museum’s exhibits range from “Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design” to “The Art of Motherhood.” This is definitely one of those destinations where you need to hunker down and set aside about six hours to take in all the visual therapy. There’s something for everyone we promise.

I mean, come on. Check out those colors! The sole mission of the Mexic-Arte Museum is to educate and provide cultural enrichment through the collection, preservation, and presentation of Mexican, Latino, and Latin American art and culture to promote dialogue and develop understanding for all museum visitors. Honestly folks, it doesn’t get much better than inclusivity through creativity and... KNOWLEDGE!

We absolutely had to mention Outdoor Voices—an active lifestyle brand headquartered in Austin—for the sheer appreciation of the fact that their slogan is “#DoingThings,” and their founder and CEO, Ty Haney, is a truly remarkable woman. Haney, a Forbes “30 Under 30” nominee, has given us athleisure-for-all that’s colorful, celebratory, and inclusive: three things that this blog post couldn’t be more excited about for Austin and SCOUT collections to come.

Much like our own bags, accessories, coolers, and everyday pieces, Austin is crazy livable and versatile. There’s a special place, activity, and setting for everyone and everything. It also doesn’t hurt that the art and architecture look like someone spilled a giant bucket of rainbow. There’s a splash of color on every corner, and you can’t help but feel a little groovy in a setting like that. Want that groovy feeling every day? Check out your own little Austin counterparts in our Spring/Summer 2019 Collection.
